O'Neil was in high school when she took part in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. The quality of her singing impressed jury, and she was promoted to the 100th round. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked at the result and exhorted the audience to support those with great singing talent, like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the bottom three once ever again. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after two more stunning performances that O'Neil would win of this year's Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show in the wake of the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
